Phil Mazza is a guitarist and composer based in Providence, Rhode Island. His aesthetic encompasses compositional work in both contemporary and traditional jazz and classical music, and an approach to guitar that spans the genres of free improvisation, jazz, classical music, EAI, noise, sound design, and rock music.
Phil composes and arranges music for a wide variety of ensembles, such as jazz small group and big-band, chamber ensemble, film, and electronic/electroacoustic settings. He is a performer and composer for various projects such as the jazz chamber ensemble Interplay, progressive jazz group Hungry Freaks, and a sideman in the jazz ensemble Baba Yaga, and Boston-based jazz quintet Meeting of the Minds. He also performs in various free improvisation groups with Providence and Boston based musicians. Phil has released recordings with the post-rock free improvisation duo Waragi (available on Yuggoth records), Hungry Freaks (Yuggoth records), Interplay, and his most recent recording with free-jazz duo with vibraphonist Ryan Kowal (available on Odd Bear records) released in January of 2017. Phil holds a BA in jazz performance and an MM in classical composition from the University of Rhode Island, where he graduated summa cum laude. He is a recipient of various grants such as the Bobby Hackett Jazz Scholarship and the Antonio Cirino Memorial Art Education Fellowship. Phil is also dedicated to music education and has over a decade of experience teaching guitar and composition to students of various ages and experience levels. |
